Video of the Week: MOMENTOS

This weeks video pick is a film titled MOMENTOS a Short film by Nuno Rocha. It’s a short 7 minute film about second chances, family and new way to re-connect. It’s won many well deserved awards, and if you haven’t gotten a chance to check it out, you’re not gonna wanna miss it.

I decided to have a little screening of our own at the Jag35 offices and show the MOMENTOS short film to our team today. I’m really glad I did. We had a short discussion about the film and it was really interesting to hear what others had to say about this short film.

The first question that came to mind was, who would do this? Why would someone take interest like this and follow thru, to set something like this up for this homeless person. Obviously there would be some interest generated by the daughter, maybe as she’s gotten older and started wondering what ever became of her dad, she began to apply pressure on her mother, and because of this, she might have set something like this up.

Another question that came up was, how does someone get to that point? This guy had a family at one point and from the videos we saw, they were a happy family, what kind of events have to happen for someone to end up homeless and sleeping on the streets. Obviously the family still wants him around, otherwise, they wouldn’t have made the efforts to find him and re-connect, the way they did. So how does he go so wrong to end up in the streets?

Either way, I think this short film created some great heart-felt moments that really make you think. The big overall theme in the film creates a sense of how important family is, and also about seconds chances. No matter what you’re going thru or what you’ve been thru, there’s always family that are willing to give you a second chance.

As far as the technical aspects of the film, Jehu pointed out that there was no dialogue, which is something that I didn’t even notice. I guess the story was told so well in my opinion that it really didn’t need any dialogue. We all understood the point, felt the right emotions at the right time and no one needed to explain it. This is quite an impressive way to tell such a moving story.

Another member of our crew, Paco, mentioned that it was a perfect story. I tend to agree with this statement. The story was complete and really took us thru a roller-coaster of emotions. There was an introductory scene to establish the setting. A light comedic scene that made everyone laugh, before it got heavier. A very emotional scene as he reminisces about his life with his daughter, very touching and sad. Another crew member Jonathan mentioned that he thought at this point that maybe his family was gone, as in maybe they passed away, and that was why he was in this state. Then there was strong climax when they reveal the daughter warmly accepting the father and making a very strong connection. Then of course there was an ending with a resolution that gives you a happy closure to the story.

Jonathan afterward mentioned, that he wanted to know more, about the story, it left him wanting more, which is definitely a good sign that this is great story-telling by Nuno Rocha. It was definitely a great film. I hope you enjoyed it as much as we did, and please feel free to post your own thoughts in the comment section below.

Momentos by Nuno Rocha Is very powerful. No words(literally) can describe this piece of art. There was no need for dialog in order for you to be touched by this story. I cannot forget the emotions that I felt at that moment, when I saw the reactions of the man watching his family on the television screen. It really shows you that everyone has their own story, problems and the opportunity to receive a second chance. Nuno Rocha really has a remarkable gift to tell a story with emotion and humor.

When the film starts to roll, I was a tad confused about what this story would be about, but it immediately got me hooked, I wanted to keep watching and it made me wonder.

At first the main character this lonely man that seemed to have no emotion and when the televisions turn on and he had company you see him starting to warm up and have an very obvious expressions, he smiled, laughed, he was inquisitive, he got mad, and just the way he looked around. He said so much with just his eyes.

I started to feel an attachment to this character when he begins to smile while he watch the images of his daughter and all of a sudden he didn’t seemed as numb as before, you start to see him showing some emotion and warmth.

For me personally I would have preferred to have seen a little more of the sadness, but at the end of it all you can’t help to feel happy for him. I wanted to know more about this character.

I think this video really opened up my eyes and helped me see that every person out there has a story. If told correctly, that journey that brought them to any certain point in their life, can make for a fascinating tale. Also I learned that life can take unexpected turns and that no matter what we do, family should be the one thing we can count on, the people that should always be there for us.

I like how the scenes are put together, and how in a very simple way they all fall into place. It creates all these feelings when you’re watching and forces us to put ourselves in the characters place. It seemed to me like it was 2 minutes instead of 7 because it moved along so well and smoothly and there was no dead or boring parts. I also like the dark blue tone and color grading they chose for this, it really fit the mood of the piece and allowed the viewer to really get sucked into the story.

I have never seen a 7 min film with this much story behind it, from beginning to end it captures the viewer’s attention and involves you in this story.

We see homeless people everyday, but have we ever sat down and thought of how they got to this point in their lives? Who were they before all this? Were they owners of a multi million dollar company that went bankrupt? Or were they managers at one of our favorite restaurant?

This may not be questions we ask ourselves when we see these people, but the videographer behind this had a vision, a vision that he turned into a video that helped us realize that the homeless are people too. They too had a life before this stage in their lives, they too had a family. Which brings up the point of our families. Having a family is a blessing, many of us might not see it like that, but after watching this video I realized that family is very important. They say you never know what you have until its gone, but in reality we always know what we have, we just never thought we could lose it. This video showed us just that it can happen to anyone. I’m sure he never thought he would lose his family, sitting there viewing those videos on tv of his daughter on a Christmas day really must of got to him.

What happened to all those happy moments? What situation in my life brought me to where I am right now? Can I change all this? These are all questions I believe were going through his head as he was viewing the images on the screen.

It was interesting that none of us realized there was no dialogue on this film until someone brought it up. It takes talent from both the videographer and the actors to create this. In conclusion, this film was great! Two thumbs up, possibly three thumbs up if i had another thumb. Personally, after viewing this it has helped me realize I need to learn to appreciate what I have NOW. Love my family now that I have them and enjoy life to the fullest but always having in mind that it could all be lost, life is to enjoy, not to have regrets.

PIPA and SOPA Want to Censor Your Internet

Some of the internet’s most influential Tech/Internet companies such as Google, Reddit, Wikipedia and many more have protested by blacking out or censoring in order to speak out against the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and PROTECT IP Act (PIPA). Why should you be aware? This bill can affect the internet as we know it.

PIPA would give the government new powers to block Americans’ access websites that corporations don’t like. The bill lets corporations and the US government censor entire websites and cut sites off from advertising, payments and donations.

This legislation will suppress free speech and innovation, not only will it threaten popular web services like Twitter, YouTube, and Facebook but it can also affect small web-based businesses such as Jag35.

The bill is scheduled for a test vote in the Senate on Jan. 24th Please let them know how you feel. Sign this petition urging Congress to vote NO on PIPA and SOPA before it is too late.

We are very thankful to everyone who submitted their name ideas, it was very overwhelming going thru all 1,500 entrees, and definitely a very hard task to find a winner with all the great names submitted.

We’ve gotten a lot of requests from people who want to have an even more simplified and more affordable rig to start out. We came up with a simple lightweight configuration that we think will be a great starting point for people who are looking forward to trying out shoulder rigs for their DSLR Cameras.

The JAG Battery – The Long Lasting Durable Battery

Recently a JAG35 customer shot a visually stunning video from Iceland. One of the devices that aided him on this trip was our very own JagBattery. The customer informed us that the battery could withstand 17 days without a single charge*, and was even dropped over 20 times and still remained perfectly intact! What else can the Jag Battery withstand?

We know the Jag Battery is reliable, but we still wanted to experiment and see how far we can push this battery’s durability. We placed the battery inside a freezer (about 20-30 degrees fahrenheit) for four hours. When we removed it from the freezer, we immediately connected the battery to a jag35 monitor, and it WORKED. Check it out. Our very own Freddy Cordova’s first video, shot and edited completely by him. He got himself a Canon Rebel T2i with the kit lens and has been showing some interest in learning more about video production, so he shot this as his first test video. Not bad for his first video, show him some love and give ‘em some words of encouragement. Hope you enjoy!

The Jag35 Slider

The new Jag35 Slider is almost ready to go. There will be two versions. A non-motorized Basic and a motorized Advanced Slider. The Slider consists of 15mm rails spaced 60mm and a camera mounting block with ball bearings. All parts will be interchangeable between the two systems. The Jag35 Slider is small, light, and very affordable.

New Favicon

Congrats to Tom Shepherd AKA @tomchop on twitter. He’s the our #Jag35Favicon contest Winner. This is the icon he designed for us. It’s very simple I know, but you have understand it’s actually really hard to design a small 16x16px icon, and still have it look nice and crisp and colorful. He did a great job, we a few others that were really good, and we’ll definitely consider using them in the future for other projects. We’ll be sending out some Jag35 swag to those entries, as well.

Also I learned all about favicons lately, what a pain, turns out most browsers deal with these files different, so not all of you will see the change right away. You might need to empty out your cache, but this is not enough on all browsers, sometimes they require a couple more steps in order to flush out the old .ico files. Anyway, we’ve updated our files and refreshed / emptied our cache files on our end server. Hopefully some of you get to see the new .ico file.
