Video of the Week: THE GIFT

vpotw_thegift

This weeks video pick of the Week was Titled “THE GIFT” directed by Carl E. Rinsch and was posted on the vimeo profile BLR_VFX. Freddy came across this video while browsing vimeo, and after I checked out some of the other work posted on this account, it’s definitely worth checking out. There’s only a few projects on there, but well worth your time.

There are so many great qualities to this very short film. Even though it all happens so quick, there’s such a deep story going on, and of course creates so many questions and makes you want more and more.

Some of the first things that caught our attention was the great cinematography, really great angles and a very cinematic feel. The aspect ratio definitely made this look like a full feature film. Right at the beginning, it becomes obvious that the CGI is top quality on this film when you see the robot animal cruising thru the hallways. This film very clearly creates a dark and cold futuristic world and it does it in a very cool way, with subtle details and advanced graphic and CGI effects.

While we were watching this, someone in the room mentioned that in this world it almost seemed as though maybe there wasn’t many humans left, as most scenes in this seemed a bit cold and distant from human life, and you sense a very futuristic world where robots are a common thing, however one of the most pressing questions when you watch this, has got to be: WHAT IS IN THE BOX? Is Unicorn a code word for something else? Is it a weapon? Or is someone’s soul? Or does it simply represent something desirable? What you most want?

Stay tuned for next week’s featured video.

This has been one of the best online Sci-Fi shorts that I have ever seen. The possession of a mystical and unusual box that leads to murder, a chase and an effort to impede it from falling into the wrong hands. This has the capability of being a great Sci-Fi full length film.

The CGI was amazing! One of the most impressive parts of the film is the car chase and that slow motion footage where the android crashes into the ground. Even though the graphics were exceptional, so many questions were left unanswered. What exactly was in that box? What truly is the unicorn? Why did the android help him? In my own opinion, I think the item in the box is something wonderful that would be able to solve many of the problems of that futuristic world… It’s also supposed to be something extraordinarily god like, something so powerful that people are prepared to kill for it, even the Andriod was ready to give its artificial life for it.

The ending just leaves you desiring more. When a short film leaves you wanting more, you definitely know that there is potential. I would gladly see a full length film based on the Gift.

The Gift is a Great short Sci-fi film. From beginning to end it leaves you wondering and wanting more. It gives you a futuristic feel of how it can be in a world with robots. It doesn’t quiet tell us whats going on, which gives you the opportunity to fill in the blanks for your self and determine what the gift can be. Not to mention the great graphics used in the film.

Theses are just a few questions that came to mind while watching The Gift, Why was the gift so important? Where did the gift come from? Why was the robot trying to protect the gift until the very end? Theses and many other questions let our imagination run wild to what may happen next.

“The Gift” by BLR_VFX is one of the most amazing short films I have seen on Vimeo, but… it left me in disappointment not knowing what was going on, and not giving much explanation.

Taking place in Russia this short film with very few dialogue and some very awesome CGI had me staring at the screen from beginning to end. The meaning of this video may not be giving to us right away, but what I believe is that the producer of this wanted the viewer to sit back and think about it and eventually have its own opinion. Kind of like making up your own story about whats going on.
In my personal opinion I don’t really think there is a story behind this, just some cool editing skills and great imagination.
The talent behind this video gives us the idea that there is great potential for a full length film, and potential for an amazing story behind it.

Everything form lighting to location, actors, and effects were great. BLR_VFX really did do a very great job on this, I just wish there would have been more explanation to the story behind it.

Wanna know more this film? We couldn’t find a Behind the Scenes piece on this film. However, if you can check out some Making of clips another one of the films these guys did. It’s really cool to see some of the sketches and processed that it took in order to create some of these scenes.

    Hello all!
Just a note on the film, “The Gift”:
This film was one of 5 short films produced by RSA FIlms.  RSA and Phillips then started the “Tell It Your Way” competition which tasked filmmakers from around the world to create their own films using the same dialogue.  Of the over 600 films submitted, 5 were chosen as finalists.   This was the winner:

This film is the perfect example of what film was meant to do – tell a story visually.  This could have been a silent film and the viewer would still understand what was happening.  While I agree “The Gift” was an exciting watch,  it doesn’t go anywhere.  The viewer doesn’t feel any emotional attachment to the characters and doesn’t get emotionally invested in the story.  On the other hand, everyone knows someone who has lived, fought, or died during a war and everyone can relate to the idea of attachment and loss.  The execution is flawless.  In my opinion, this is best short film I’ve seen in a long time.

    Keep rockin’!

Wow… seems like we just barely scratch the tip of an iceberg. Will have to look into some of the other entries. Thanks for sharing.
